WHAT'S NEW
Our cold winters can be especially hard on pets, but a little preparation in the Fall can help them - and you - be a little more comfortable.
-
Make sure your pets have shelter from the cold wind and snow such as their own house. Straw or other bedding makes for a comfortable and cozy environment. Consider pet-specific heat pads or beds that can be purchased from a pet supply company.
-
Bring animals in on especially cold days and nights.
-
Make sure water is fresh and free from ice. A heated water bowl is ideal for both dogs and cats.
-
Walking or exercising your dog is important, Think about providing a coat for your dog and afterwards, clean snow or ice from paws. Guard against frostbite on the ears.
-
Be especially cautious when working with anti-freeze for your car. Dispose of properly and make sure pets - yours or your neighbors' - are not allowed to drink it.
-
With holidays approaching, make sure that small decorations are not mistaken for toys or treats. Watch animals carefully around toxic plants such as poinsettias.
